Given the sporting genes running through his family, it's little surprise that Hubert Hurkacz went on to become a tennis pro. His mother Zofia was Polish junior tennis champion, and his two uncles were also gifted tennis players. His grandfather was part of the Polish national volleyball team, and Hurkacz's sister, ten years his junior, also spends plenty of time on court. Born on 11 February 1997 in Wroclaw, the 1.96 m right-hander started playing tennis at just five years old, first coached by his mother and father, Krzysztof.

After watching Roger Federer on television as a young boy, Hubert Hurkacz decided he wanted to become a tennis professional. Throughout his junior years and his first seasons on the pro tour, he was coached by Filip Kańczuła. Besides tennis, the top player - who has followed a largely vegan diet for years - played a lot of basketball in his youth and could have had a future there too, had tennis not worked out. Beyond racket and ball sports, Hubert Hurkacz is also a passionate motorsport fan with a real soft spot for anything on four wheels.

A defensively-minded all-court player with a hammer of a serve

Hubert Hurkacz is a versatile player who is just as capable of attacking and dictating the tempo as he is of defending. The Pole is a classic all-court player who tends to fall back towards the baseline when defending. Thanks in no small part to his near two-metre frame, he hits rock-solid groundstrokes, with his two-handed backhand matching his forehand for speed and power. Hurkacz's game is built around stamping his authority on rallies with flat, dangerous shots and closing out points with outright winners. As is typical for this type of player, that approach also brings plenty of unforced errors.

Hubert Hurkacz also boasts a feared serve, hitting top speeds of over 240 km/h while still finding the lines with precision. His favourite surface is grass, even though he tends to pick up his titles on hard courts. When competing at grass-court events, he's seen coming to net far more often, and isn't shy about diving after balls in true Boris Becker style. His coach Craig Boynton, though, says his protégé's style reminds him more of Andy Murray. Unusually for a tennis player - and against every coach's advice - Hubert Hurkacz actually closes his eyes on contact, rather than watching the ball all the way through the shot.

Key milestones on the road to the top of the world rankings

Until he was 18, Hubert Hurkacz played on the junior tour, picking up plenty of success along the way. Alongside two singles titles and three more in doubles, reaching the doubles final at the 2015 Australian Open ranks among his greatest triumphs as a junior. From 2014, the talented Pole with the booming serve increasingly competed on the ITF and Challenger circuits, winning several singles and doubles titles. In 2016, Hurkacz made his Davis Cup debut for Poland, though he couldn't win a match in the tie against Argentina.

After a few years on the Futures tour, he finally broke into an ATP main draw in Budapest in 2018, only to be knocked out in the first round. He fared better shortly afterwards at the French Open, reaching the second round on his very first Grand Slam appearance as a pro, where he lost to Croatia's Marin Cilic. These consistently strong performances, including several Challenger title wins, earned Hurkacz a spot at the Next Gen ATP Finals.

First ATP title and qualification for the ATP Finals

The following year he qualified for the main draw at all four majors, though he only got past the first round once, reaching the third round at Wimbledon. In late summer 2019, Hurkacz claimed his first ATP title in Winston-Salem, beating Frenchman Benoit Paire in the final. Thanks to this strong season, Hubert Hurkacz broke into the ATP Top 40 for the first time in his career. The following year, alongside Felix Auger-Aliassime, he won his first Masters title in doubles in Paris.

The Pole's rise continued in earnest in 2021: on his way to his first Grand Slam semi-final at Wimbledon, he first overcame then-world number two Daniil Medvedev, before bringing eight-time champion Roger Federer to his knees. From that point on, if not before, the name Hubert Hurkacz was known well beyond tennis circles. And the next big success wasn't far behind: winning the Miami Open earned him his first Masters title, at the time the biggest achievement of his professional career. Reaching the semi-final at the Paris Masters then lifted Hubert Hurkacz to a career-high ninth in the world rankings. That secured him, with barely a moment to spare, his first-ever qualification for the ATP Finals - though he was eliminated there in the round robin stage.

Established among the world's best: the successes since 2022

At the 2022 Dubai Tennis Championships, Hubert Hurkacz reached his first ATP 500 semi-final after beating Jannik Sinner in the quarter-final. In March, Hurkacz went into the Miami Open as defending champion, seeded eighth. In the semi-final, he fought a tightly contested battle with Carlos Alcaraz, eventually losing in two sets, both of which were decided in a tie-break. Even so, he reached the fourth round at the French Open for the first time. In June, Hurkacz then claimed his first title of the year at the Halle Open. That success marked his fifth straight singles final win, making him only the seventh player in the Open Era to win the first five ATP finals of his career.

In 2023, Hurkacz kept up his impressive run. At the Monte-Carlo Masters, he secured his 50th Masters win - more than any other Polish player before him. In October, he reached his third Masters final, in Shanghai. There, he crowned himself champion with a three-set win over Andrey Rublev, claiming his second Masters title and seventh title overall. And in 2024, Hurkacz continued his success story. After reaching his second Halle Open final, he climbed two places in the world rankings on 24 June 2024, reaching a new career-high of number seven.
