Alex de Minaur: the modest Australian with a huge fighting heart

Alex de Minaur has a multinational background and holds both Australian and Spanish citizenship. He was born in Sydney to a Spanish mother and a father of Uruguayan descent. While still young, he and his family moved to Alicante in Spain. His family also includes his older brother Dominic and his younger siblings Daniel, Cristina and Sara.

Alex started playing tennis at the age of four, after his mother signed him up for tennis lessons. He continues to place great value on his Australian roots and has since moved his residence back to his birthplace, Sydney. He competes in the Davis Cup for Australia and speaks fluent English, Spanish and French.

Alex de Minaur is “ATP Newcomer of the Year 2018”

Alex de Minaur was voted “ATP Newcomer of the Year 2018” by his fellow players on tour. He names the two Grand Slam tournaments at Wimbledon and Melbourne as his favourites. By his own admission, he feels completely at home especially on grass. Among his great sporting idols is Roger Federer. The 1.83-metre-tall Australian's playing style is reminiscent of his mentor, Lleyton Hewitt. Like the former top player, Alex de Minaur also possesses explosive groundstrokes, brilliant defence and footwork, and the huge heart of a fighter.

Alex de Minaur's social commitment is remarkable. For example, he donated 250 US dollars for every ace he hit at the 2020 ATP Cup to Australian bushfire relief. Thanks to his 18 aces, this raised a total of 4,500 US dollars. He's especially proud of being part of the Australian Davis Cup team, as shown not least by the “109” tattoo on his chest: Alex de Minaur is the 109th player to represent the Australian Davis Cup team. Besides tennis, the Australian enjoys playing golf and football. Alex de Minaur's favourite football team is Real Madrid, as his mother has long been a fan of the Spanish club. He also enjoys following the successes of the NSW State of Origin rugby team.

“Demon” is Alex de Minaur's nickname

Alex de Minaur's speed and mobility on court have earned him the affectionate nickname “Demon” on the ATP Tour, which he now also wears on his shoes. He's considered one of the fastest players on tour and has the ability to run down seemingly impossible balls and hit winners even from apparently hopeless positions. Thanks to his fighting spirit and intensity on court, he now has a large fan following. Alex de Minaur is regarded as modest, works hard, and displays an extremely professional attitude even at a young age.

In rallies, he likes to suddenly change pace to surprise his opponent. With his first serve followed by a forehand, he frequently tries to reach quick points. The right-hander's forehand is significantly better than his two-handed backhand, especially on the offensive. Alex de Minaur has a strong first serve, while his second serve is noticeably weaker and offers his opponents an opening to attack. His volley game also has room for improvement, giving him potential to grow further.

Davis Cup debut for the Australian team against Germany

In his Grand Slam debut in 2017 at the Australian Open, Alex de Minaur beat Gerald Melzer in five sets in his first-round match. At the start of the 2018 season he reached his first World Tour final in Sydney, where he was ultimately beaten by Daniil Medvedev. Alex de Minaur made his debut for the Australian Davis Cup team against Germany. On his debut he lost to Alexander Zverev in a fifth-set tie-break. He claimed his first title on the Challenger Tour in June 2018. Major milestones of his career came in the 2019 season with title wins at the ATP tournaments in Sydney, Atlanta and Zhuhai. At the US Open in 2019, Alex de Minaur reached his first Grand Slam fourth round. On 28 October 2019 he reached a new career high of world number 18, cementing his rise into the tennis elite. At the US Open 2020 he achieved a further milestone by reaching a Grand Slam quarter-final for the first time. The year 2021 brought him two titles: he claimed the tournament win in Antalya as well as in Eastbourne, where he crowned himself champion on grass for the first time. Another success followed in 2023, when he won a tournament in the prestigious 500 category for the first time, in Acapulco. His impressive run continued seamlessly as he reached his first Masters final in Toronto. Following his final appearance in Rotterdam, he broke into the world rankings' Top Ten for the first time on 19 February 2024, cementing his position among the best in the world. That same year, he again reached the quarter-finals at the French Open, but had to concede there in three sets to Alexander Zverev.
