    Felix Auger-Aliassime: The Canadian Tennis Player with African Roots

    Canadian tennis player Felix Auger-Aliassime is one of the youngest players ever to break into the ATP top 25. Felix Auger-Aliassime was born on August 8, 2000 in Montreal, Canada, and grew up in L'Ancienne-Lorette, a suburb of Quebec City. These days he lives in Monte Carlo, Monaco.

    His father, Sam Aliassime, comes from Togo, while his mother, Marie Auger, is Canadian. His older sister Malika has also played on the professional tour.     Auger-Aliassime, together with teammates Denis Shapovalov and Benjamin Sigouin, helped Canada win the junior Davis Cup for the first time in 2015. The young Canadians beat the German team 2-1 in that final. Auger-Aliassime has also made his debut in the men's Davis Cup. His decisive singles rubber was met with wild celebration, when his win over Norbert Gombos secured Team Canada's overall victory and, with it, qualification for the Davis Cup Finals in Madrid.

    Milestones in Auger-Aliassime's Professional Career

    Auger-Aliassime celebrated his first win on the Challenger Tour in 2015 at just 14 years of age, making him the youngest tennis player ever to win a match at that level. At the 2018 US Open, Auger-Aliassime qualified for the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time.

    However, he had to retire early in the third set of his first-round match against Denis Shapovalov due to heart problems that flared up in the sweltering heat. This has happened to him several times over the years, though there's no cause for concern, as his coach Guillaume Marx has explained that the issues are simply related to his growth.

    A highlight of Auger-Aliassime's ATP career came at the 2020 US Open, where he reached the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time, ultimately losing there to the eventual champion, Dominic Thiem.

    Sharing a Birthday with His Great Idol

    Felix's biggest idol is Roger Federer. As it happens, the two share the same birthday. In 2017, Federer invited the Canadian to several training sessions in Dubai, which Felix was thrilled about. He also names former tennis pro Yannick Noah as another dream opponent.

    In his spare time, Felix Auger-Aliassime's great passion is art. He enjoys playing the piano and even performed at the players' party at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Monte Carlo in 2019. According to Felix himself, he'd certainly be an artist if he weren't out on the ATP Tour as a professional tennis player. Alongside tennis, Felix is also very interested in other sports. Among other things, he's a huge fan of the Montreal Canadiens, who play in North America's professional NHL ice hockey league.

    Felix Auger-Aliassime speaks French and English. His commitment off the court also deserves a mention: for every point he won in 2020, he donated five US dollars to “EduChange,” supporting the protection and education of children in Togo. French banking giant BNP Paribas topped this up with a further 15 US dollars for each of Auger-Aliassime's 4,904 points won that year, bringing the total donation to 98,080 US dollars.
