    Coco Gauff: On the Way to the Top of the World

    American tennis player Coco Gauff played her first pro season in 2018 and was already achieving success on the WTA Tour. Cori “Coco” Gauff was born on March 13, 2004, in Delray Beach, Florida. She has two brothers, Codey, four years younger, and Cameron, nine years younger.

    Coco grew up in Atlanta but moved to Florida for better training opportunities. She's coached by her father, Corey, who played college basketball in the state of Georgia. She comes from a highly sports-loving family: her mother, Candi, was an outstanding gymnast and track-and-field athlete at Florida State University.

    Coco Gauff started playing tennis at age six. She names Venus and Serena Williams as her biggest tennis idols. The immense courage and ambition of the Williams sisters inspired her to become a tennis player herself: “Serena Williams has always been my idol, and Venus too,” says Coco. “They're the reason I wanted to pick up a tennis racket.”

    In her free time, Coco loves spending time with her brother and family. She enjoys watching superhero movies and making TikTok videos. She doesn't currently have any pets but is trying to convince her mom to get a dog. Coco's favorite city is Paris, thanks to its history, food, and architecture. As her favorite celebrity, Coco names American R&B and pop singer Beyoncé.

    Standing 175 centimeters tall, this right-hander plays a two-handed backhand and prefers hard courts. The highly ambitious Coco describes herself as a “fighter” and her style of play as “as aggressive as possible.”

    Coco Is the Youngest Player Ever to Qualify for Wimbledon

    In June 2018, Coco Gauff — already dubbed a “true diamond in the rough” by Steffi Graf — won the girls' singles title at the French Open. Shortly before that, she played her first professional tournament on the ITF Women's Circuit in Osprey, Florida. In June 2019, she took part in the Wimbledon Championships, becoming, at 15 years and 106 days old, the youngest player of the Open Era to qualify for Wimbledon through regular qualifying.

    Gauff celebrated her first WTA Tour title in October 2019 at the Upper Austria Ladies Linz, beating Latvia's Jeļena Ostapenko 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 in the final. Along the way, she also beat Kiki Bertens and Andrea Petkovic, among others. Coco made headlines in January 2020 when, at just 15, she beat her role model Venus Williams in her opening match at the Australian Open — just as she had at Wimbledon in 2019 — and went on to beat defending champion Naomi Osaka in the third round. Another major success in Coco Gauff's still-young tennis career came with her final win in May 2021 at the WTA 250 tournament in Parma on clay, beating China's Wang Qiang 6-1, 6-3.

    Grand Slam Glory in New York and Flag Bearer in Paris

    Gauff reached her first Grand Slam singles final at the 2022 French Open, which lifted her to No. 13 in the world rankings — her best singles ranking up to that point. At the US Open, she reached the quarterfinals for the first time in her career. Then, in September 2023, came her huge breakthrough: Gauff won the US Open, securing her first Grand Slam title by beating world No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka in a thrilling three-set final. That made her the first American teenager since Serena Williams in 1999 to win the US Open singles title. The triumph also lifted her to No. 3 in the world rankings.

    In 2024, the young American continued to make history, breaking Caroline Wozniacki's record for the most WTA 1000 titles won before turning 21. She was also chosen by her fellow Olympians as Team USA's flag bearer at the opening ceremony of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris — alongside none other than basketball legend LeBron James. That made her the youngest athlete ever to take on that role.
