    Elena Rybakina: A Tennis Player with Powerful Groundstrokes

    Born on June 17, 1999 in Russia, tennis player Elena Rybakina, often also referred to as “Jelena Rybakina” in professional tennis, has been representing Kazakhstan since 2018. She started playing tennis at the age of five and trained as a junior at the Spartak Club in Moscow. Her first big successes at junior level came in 2017, when she reached the semifinals of both the Australian Open and the French Open.

    Elena has been coached by former Croatian tennis player Stefano Vukov since February 2019. Among her earlier coaches was also Andrei Cheshnokov, who had already worked with her at the Spartak Tennis Club. Her rising form was rewarded in 2019 with a nomination for the “WTA Newcomer of the Year Award.” Her favorite surface is hard court.

    Elena's biggest tennis idol growing up was Roger Federer, and he still is today. Among the women, she especially enjoyed watching Justine Henin's matches. In her limited free time, Elena likes to spend time with friends and her dog, a beagle named Mulia.

    Elena Rybakina Wins WTA Title in Bucharest

    Elena Rybakina made her debut on the ITF Women's World Tennis Tour back in 2014 and played her first WTA Tour tournament in 2017 at the Kremlin Cup in Moscow. In 2019, she reached the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time at the French Open. That same year, in July, she celebrated her first WTA title in Bucharest on clay, beating Romania's Patricia Maria Tig comfortably 6-2, 6-0 in the final. By the end of 2019, she had climbed into the world's top 50.

    Cracking the Top 20 for the First Time in 2020

    Elena's start to 2020 was crowned with an important success. In January 2020, she defeated China's Zhang Shuai 7-6, 6-3 in the final in Hobart, claiming her second WTA title. That same year, she reached three more WTA finals, in Shenzhen, St. Petersburg, and Dubai, but lost all three to Ekaterina Alexandrova, Kiki Bertens, and Simona Halep. After reaching the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time at the Australian Open, she climbed to No. 17 in the world rankings in February 2020. In Adelaide, she fought her way to the final of the WTA tournament in January 2022, but had to admit defeat to Australia's Ashleigh Barty.

    At Wimbledon in 2022, she reached the semifinals of a Grand Slam for the first time, making history as the first Kazakh singles player to do so. But that wasn't all: in the final, she defeated Ons Jabeur to claim her first Grand Slam title. With this triumph, she became the youngest Wimbledon champion since 21-year-old Petra Kvitova in 2011.

    Rybakina was once again in the spotlight at the 2023 Australian Open. Despite a strong start and taking the first set, she lost a high-quality final to Aryna Sabalenka. Still, her run took her into the world's top 10. In the Indian Wells final, Rybakina got her revenge: she beat Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets to claim her first WTA 1000 title. This result catapulted her to No. 7 in the world rankings, the highest of her career to date.

    Elena Rybakina's Aggressive Baseline Game

    Standing at 184 centimeters, Elena Rybakina is a right-hander who plays a two-handed backhand. She has an aggressive baseline game aimed at ending rallies as quickly as possible. This high-risk playing style produces plenty of winners, but also its fair share of unforced errors. She hits both her forehand and backhand very flat and with remarkable speed. With either groundstroke she can generate huge power on center court and win a lot of quick points.

    Elena Rybakina also has a powerful serve, reaching speeds of up to 192 km/h (119 mph). This allows her to rack up plenty of aces on her own service games. In 2020, Elena was the player on tour with the most direct points won on serve. She is also an excellent doubles player and likes to come to the net in singles too, finishing off rallies with her very solid volley.

    On court, Elena Rybakina carries herself very calmly and shows plenty of self-confidence. Especially in her hard-fought three-set matches, she has repeatedly shown great nerve at the crucial moments and come out on top against her opponents.
