Taylor Fritz: Big-Time Serve and Solid Groundstrokes
American Taylor Fritz has been on the pro tennis tour since 2015. In recent years he has celebrated several final wins on both the ATP Challenger Tour and the ATP Tour.
Taylor Harry Fritz was born on October 28, 1997, in London, and started playing tennis with his parents at the age of two. His father, Guy, is a tennis coach himself, and his mother, Kathy May, was a top-10 player on the WTA Tour. He has two brothers, Chris and Kyle, and already has a son, Jordan, born in 2017, with his ex-wife Raquel Pedraza, who also played professional tennis.
Taylor Fritz enjoys playing on every surface fairly equally, though he prefers competing on home soil at the US Open. He names his serve and forehand as his best shots. His childhood idols were Juan Martín del Potro and Pete Sampras, who presented him with a cake on his 18th birthday at the 2015 MEX Challenger in Monterrey. According to Taylor Fritz, Sampras — alongside Andre Agassi — would also be his dream opponent.
Taylor Fritz: 2016 ATP Newcomer of the Year
Taylor Fritz was voted 2016 ATP Newcomer of the Year by his fellow players on tour. In his free time, he enjoys playing FIFA on his console and hanging out with friends. Taylor is a fan of the English football club Manchester United and roots for the Los Angeles Chargers in the NFL.
Taylor Fritz's social commitment off the tennis court is also noteworthy. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he teamed up with social media influencer Addison Rae to win a Nintendo Mario Tennis tournament, donating one million US dollars to No Kid Hungry — an organization dedicated to supporting children in poverty across the US.
High-speed serve up to 240 km/h
The 6'5" (196 cm) American is right-handed and plays a two-handed backhand. He has an exceptionally fast serve that can reach speeds of up to 240 km/h, along with solid groundstrokes on both the forehand and backhand.
One of his biggest strengths is hitting fast crosscourt shots off both wings from any angle. Opponents also fear his clever topspin lob.
Major successes in Taylor Fritz's tennis career
In 2018, Fritz won the Newport Beach Challenger at the start of the year and defended that title the following year. At the 2018 US Open, he reached the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time. In 2019, Taylor Fritz made his debut for the US Davis Cup team.
In June 2019, Taylor Fritz claimed his first ATP Tour title as an unseeded player at the ATP 250 event in Eastbourne, beating Sam Querrey in the grass-court final 6-3, 6-4. He won his first Masters 1000 title at Indian Wells, where in March 2022 he beat Rafael Nadal in the final in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6. This victory gave a huge boost to both his confidence and his popularity among tennis fans: “My name is much better known in Europe now than before, mainly thanks to beating Rafael Nadal in Indian Wells,” said Fritz. It made him the first American player to win the Indian Wells title since Andre Agassi in 2001. The triumph also propelled him into the world's top 15.
Bronze at the Olympic Games in Paris
Seeded third at the Eastbourne International, Fritz continued his run of success: in the semifinal he beat defending champion Alex de Minaur, reaching the final of the event for the first time since his title win in 2019. He achieved another milestone at Wimbledon, reaching the quarterfinal of a Grand Slam for the first time. There he played an epic five-set thriller against two-time Wimbledon champion Rafael Nadal, but lost in the decisive fifth-set tiebreak.
In 2023, Fritz continued his run of success, winning his sixth title at the Atlanta Open. At the US Open, he reached the quarterfinal for the first time, but had to bow out against eventual champion Novak Djokovic. At the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, seeded third in doubles alongside Tommy Paul, he reached the semifinal and went on to secure the bronze medal by beating the Czech pairing.
