Daniil Medvedev – A Bear of a Russian

Daniil Sergeyevich Medvedev was born on February 11, 1996, in the Russian capital, Moscow. His nickname “The Bear” comes from his surname, since “medved” is the Russian word for bear. He has two older sisters, Yulia and Elena. When Daniil was nine, he was actually meant to become a swimmer, but during training at his local pool he noticed an ad for tennis, and from then on he'd rather swing a racket than stoically grind out laps. His mother Olga and father Sergei encouraged their son to make the switch.

Medvedev, who holds a tennis-coaching diploma from Moscow University, speaks fluent English and French in addition to his native language. In 2017, he moved from Moscow to the French Riviera to be closer to his sister Elena. There he met French tennis coach Gilles Cervera, and a partnership began that would carry the lanky young player to the sport's elite. A year later, on September 12, Daniil Medvedev married his girlfriend Daria in Moscow.

A Baseliner Strong on Defense

Daniil Medvedev is a baseline player with outstanding court coverage. Despite standing 1.98 meters tall, he's remarkably fast, which makes him an excellent defensive player. Thanks to his enormous stamina, Medvedev usually gets the better of nearly any opponent in long baseline rallies, and cleverly uses his speed on the occasional net approach. His best shot as a right-hander is his two-handed backhand, which he can hit clean and precise right down the line. But his unorthodox, rapidly accelerating forehand also regularly gives opponents headaches. Pro Debut and Breakthrough on the ATP Tour

After making his pro debut in 2014, Daniil Medvedev initially played mostly on the Futures Tour. He notched his first ATP Tour win in 2016 in 's-Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands. A year later, Medvedev reached his first ATP tour-level final in Chennai, and at Wimbledon that summer he recorded his first Grand Slam win, beating the then world No. 3 Stan Wawrinka in four sets. He then made a somewhat inglorious exit from London in the second round, hit with a fine for verbally abusing the chair umpire.

Undeterred, the Russian tennis star continued his rise into the tennis elite the following year. In January 2018, Medvedev celebrated his first ATP Tour title at the Sydney International and climbed to No. 16 in the men's rankings during the year, his best ranking up to that point. In 2019, Medvedev then won two Masters titles in one go, beating David Goffin in Cincinnati, Ohio, and Alexander Zverev in Shanghai. In between, he reached his first Grand Slam final at the US Open against Rafael Nadal, though he lost it after five hard-fought sets.

Even so, his outstanding season, which included no fewer than nine tour-level finals, earned him a top-10 world ranking for the first time and a spot at the ATP Finals in London, where he exited without a win, however. Medvedev did far better a year later, beating Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal on his way to the title, and finally overcoming Austrian Dominic Thiem in the final. Daniil Medvedev's fine form continued into early 2021, when in January he led his home country of Russia to victory at the ATP Cup and shortly afterward claimed the No. 2 world ranking for the first time.

Since 2021, on a Major Winning Streak: Medvedev Reaches the Top

At the 2021 Australian Open, Medvedev reached the final, where he had to concede a clear defeat to Novak Djokovic in straight sets. However, the Russian celebrated his biggest success to date only a short time later at the US Open, where he faced the Serb again in the final and beat him in impressive fashion. The 2022 season began just as promisingly: Medvedev reached the Australian Open final for the second time. But despite leading two sets to love, he couldn't close out the win — Rafael Nadal turned the match around and claimed his 21st Grand Slam title. Even so, on February 28, the Russian climbed to the summit of tennis for the first time, reaching world No. 1.

Medvedev also began the 2023 season with plenty of momentum. In Rotterdam, he fought his way to the year's first title with a three-set win over Jannik Sinner. Two more trophies followed in Doha and Dubai. He kept satisfying his hunger for success in Miami, where he won the Miami Open for the first time. In Rome, he also crowned himself the champion on clay — his sixth Masters title overall. Medvedev also made history at Wimbledon, reaching the semifinal for the first time. At the US Open he then stood in the final for the third time, but once again had to bow to “Nole.” The 2024 Australian Open final turned into a particularly bitter experience for Medvedev: just as in 2022, he once again squandered a two-set lead — a unique record in the Open Era.
