Daria Kasatkina: Russian Baseliner with a Clever Shot Repertoire

Daria Sergeyevna Kasatkina — her name is also often spelled “Darya Sergeyevna Kasatkina” — is a Russian professional tennis player born on May 7, 1997, in Tolyatti, an industrial city about 1,000 kilometers southeast of Moscow. She comes from a very athletic family. Her mother excelled in track and field, and her father in ice hockey. The family also includes her older brother Alexandr, who also played tennis as a child and got her into the sport at age six. Alexandr now travels with her as her personal fitness trainer on tour. Daria is also very interested in other sports. She loves football, and her favorite team is FC Barcelona.

Daria Kasatkina already celebrated major success as a junior, winning a Grand Slam singles title at the French Open in 2014. She was also very successful on the WTA Tour from a young age. She claimed her first WTA title as a teenager in 2017 at the Charleston Open, beating Jelena Ostapenko in the final. A particularly great tennis year was 2021, when Daria Kasatkina defeated Marie Bouzková and Margarita Gasparyan in finals on hard courts at WTA tournaments in Melbourne and St. Petersburg. In 2022 too, she enjoyed final wins on the WTA Tour, in San José against Shelby Rogers and in Granby against Daria Saville.

The 170-centimeter-tall right-hander is regarded as a classic baseliner. Even though she's achieved her biggest successes on the WTA Tour mainly on hard courts, clay is actually her preferred surface. Daria herself names her forehand as her best shot.

As a baseliner, Daria Kasatkina has a highly versatile shot repertoire that often allows her to outsmart her opponents. It ranges from a powerful topspin forehand to a one-handed slice backhand and surprising drop shots. Daria plays very clever tennis, happily mixing in unexpected changes of rhythm and pace. Because of her exceptional style, Belgian tennis coach Wim Fissette dubbed her the “Roger Federer of women's tennis.”
