Barbora Krejcikova: her French Open title as the milestone of her career

Czech tennis player Barbora Krejcikova was born on 18 December 1995 in Brno. She started playing tennis at the age of six and already achieved great success as a junior on the court.

An unforgettable victory, and probably the greatest milestone of her tennis career, was her singles final win at the 2021 French Open. Barbora Krejcikova managed to win the Grand Slam final in Paris as an unseeded player, just two weeks after her first WTA Tour title in Strasbourg. This came as a huge surprise even to tennis experts, since up to that point she had mainly been regarded in the sport as a doubles specialist. Even so, in a thrilling three-set match at the 2021 French Open, she defeated Russia's Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-1, 2-6, 6-4, a result she herself later described as a “big dream come true”. During the trophy ceremony, she also paid tribute to her coach and mentor Jana Novotná, who had died in 2017, saying she owed everything to her.

Barbora Krejcikova wins Olympic gold

She celebrated further Grand Slam triumphs in the women's doubles at the French Open in 2018 and 2021 and at Wimbledon in 2018, each time alongside Kateřina Siniaková. The Czech women's doubles pair also claimed gold at the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics. She also showed her doubles strengths in mixed doubles, winning the Australian Open mixed title three years in a row from 2019 to 2021.

Setbacks and a comeback: her Wimbledon triumph as a career highlight

After a three-month break due to an elbow injury, she returned to the French Open singles draw in 2022 as defending champion. There, however, she suffered a surprising first-round defeat to a French wildcard player. It was only the third time in the tournament's history that the defending champion had gone out in the first round. She also suffered an early exit at the US Open, going out in the second round.

Seeded 31st, Krejcikova reached her second Grand Slam singles final at Wimbledon 2024. In the final, she defeated seventh-seeded Jasmine Paolini to secure her second Grand Slam singles title. She became one of the lowest-ranked players ever to win the Wimbledon singles title since the introduction of the WTA rankings in 1975. This success saw her return to the singles world Top 10.

Barbora Krejcikova's game: a strong volley and a surprising forehand slice

The 178cm-tall Czech is coached by Petr Kovacka and plays a two-handed backhand. Barbora Krejčíková is known for her strong serve, her powerful groundstrokes and excellent net play. She often manages to surprise her opponents by suddenly injecting extra pace into rallies. With her groundstrokes, she frequently puts her opponent under pressure and forces errors. Her strongest groundstroke is her two-handed backhand, with which she can also play extreme angles.

Barbora also likes to mix in the occasional backhand slice to take pace out of the rally. On the forehand, she mostly uses heavy topspin to push her opponent well behind the baseline and dictate the rally. She also likes to play a forehand slice to catch her opponent off guard. Thanks to her doubles experience, she is an exceptionally good net player. She mostly stays on the baseline until the opportunity arises to attack the net. Barbora Krejčíková also has excellent footwork.

Occasionally, Barbora Krejcikova also plays serve-and-volley to win quick points. With her first serve, she reaches top speeds of up to 180 km/h. This powerful first serve brings her plenty of aces, or allows her to dictate play right from the start. Her kick and slice second serves also frequently cause opponents major problems. However, her risky serve also leads to a relatively high number of double faults. With her combination of aggressive and defensive skills, Barbora copes well on all surfaces. She prefers to play on clay, as the somewhat slower pace there allows her to execute her style of play to perfection.
