Lacoste was founded by French tennis player René Lacoste. In 1927 he designed the famous short-sleeved Lacoste polo shirt “L 12.12” with its innovative piqué fabric, originally as a tennis shirt for his own use. How did Lacoste get its famous crocodile logo?

René Lacoste chose the legendary crocodile as his company logo after a shopping trip in Boston in 1923 with his Davis Cup teammate Pierre Gillou, who promised him an alligator-skin suitcase if he won his tennis match that day. Lacoste actually lost the match, but the nickname “The Crocodile” stuck. From then on, the tenacious qualities of a crocodile became inseparable from René Lacoste's game and fighting spirit. Since the name stuck with him, he had a green crocodile emblem sewn onto his tennis clothing.

Worth noting: for years Lacoste has fought against manufacturers of counterfeit goods and, under the slogan “Save Our Species”, champions endangered animals such as crocodiles and alligators.
