String rollers – a cheap string alternative not just for professionals

A good, high-performance tennis string is just as important to your game as your tennis racket. Even if you only hit the tennis court once a week, you should have new strings put on your racquet at least twice a year. The problem: If you use different providers for occasional stringing, you will get a different string with completely different playing characteristics every time. Experienced players appreciate it when they can rely on their racket string set and always have the same performance. It is therefore definitely worth considering buying a whole roll of your favorite string and storing it in the basement. Reels are usually made with 200 meter string lengths. For an average single string you will need around 12 meters of string. This means that one roll is enough for a good 16 strings. If you browse our string shop, you will find that many of the strings offered as individual sets are also available as a roll. Compare the prices and actually think about whether a reel with your favorite stringing would be a good alternative. By the way: Almost all providers of stringing services have nothing against putting on strings that you bring with you and offer their own tariff for this. It should be somewhere between ten and twenty euros and is certainly negotiable.

How do I find the perfect string to order as a roll?

If you just want to try out how crucial a tennis string with the right tension is for your game, just test our string advisor. Here we have stored the experiences of countless tennis players in a database. In the string advisor you provide some information about the type of playing you do and you will then receive three results with strings that optimally match your information. Then it's time to test, test, test. Try out different strings (also in different thicknesses!) and find the one that best supports your playing.

Tip: When testing strings, make sure that you test in different weather conditions if possible. The properties of the strings change quickly in high heat, high humidity or cool temperatures.

Once you have found a string that suits you well in every respect, the only question that remains is whether this string is also offered as a reel - which is usually the case with all premium manufacturers. “String sharing” is also a good idea: get together with your teammates and buy one or more string rolls together. This reduces costs and gives you the security of always being able to rely on proven material.

What you should consider when buying string reels

In general, the string rolls are identical to the single strings in terms of their playing characteristics. We have here on our Shop page for strings explains in detail which string categories there are and what should be taken into account when testing and purchasing. All of these criteria and distinctions also apply to tennis strings that you buy as a roll. Since a role is an investment for a few months, you should, as mentioned at the beginning, test it thoroughly before you decide.

What is the best way to store my string roll?

The string rolls that you find in our shop are all shipped in well-protected outer packaging. Ideally, you should also store them at home in this packaging. In general, it is important to ensure that the string is stored in a cool, dry place and is not permanently exposed to direct sunlight. To be on the safe side, you can of course also ask your stringer whether he will store and label the string for you. Then all you have to do in the future is hand over your racket and the stringing professional will know exactly what to do. Since strings often break at inappropriate times, you can cut the 200 meter string on the roll into suitable pieces of around 12 meters each and pack them separately, ideally in a waterproof bag. Then you always have a string ready to quickly go to the stringer if you need a freshly strung racket for the upcoming match.

No more coincidences: string it yourself with your own string rolls and a stringing machine

If you are interested in string reels, you may at some point ask yourself whether you are a “candidate” for stringing yourself. Here's another tip: get together with other committed players in your club and form a “stringing group”. A quality stringing machine is of course also available in our shop; manual devices are available for under 500 euros, while prices for an electronically controlled stringing machine vary from around 700 to 1,500 euros. And of course you will also find the suitable accessories that a stringer needs for stringing. If you calculate how many strings the team needs per year, how much you save when buying strings by purchasing reels and how much you save on the stringing service, your own machine will quickly pay for itself. And there is certainly a safe place for the machine and the string rollers in the clubhouse. For an introduction to the art of correct stringing, we recommend taking a course that various companies offer or tutorials on www.
