    Jule Niemeier: powerful serve and outstanding tennis IQ

    German tennis player Jule Niemeier was born on 12 August 1999 in Dortmund. She lives and trains in Regensburg. Jule, who's also known by the nicknames Jules and Juli, took her first swings on a tennis court at just three years old. The Niemeier family includes mother Annette, father Michael, and her two brothers Jona and Nils. From the age of 15 she trained in Offenbach at the Tennis University run by former tennis pro Alexander Waske.

    Jule names the forehand as her favourite shot. During matches she also likes to mix in slices and drop shots during rallies. Her favourite surface is clay. Her coach is former German tennis pro Christopher Kas. She names Rafael Nadal as her favourite player. Alongside tennis, she's also very keen on football. Jule played football herself for two years and is a big Borussia Dortmund fan.

    Jule Niemeier's brilliant Grand Slam runs in 2022

    Jule Niemeier's first professional season was 2016. On the ITF Women's World Tennis Tour she has won five singles titles to date. She made her WTA Tour debut in May 2019 at the age of 18. In 2021 she reached the semi-finals of the WTA tournaments in Strasbourg and Hamburg, and from 2022 onwards she also began performing very successfully at Grand Slam level. In May 2022, Jule qualified for the main draw at the French Open for the first time.

    A milestone in Jule Niemeier's WTA career came in June 2022 with a final win at a WTA tournament in Makarska, Croatia, where she beat Italy's Elisabetta Cocciaretto in two sets. Shortly after, she surprised the tennis world by reaching the quarter-final on her Wimbledon debut, where she lost to Tatjana Maria in a thrilling three-set match. She confirmed her top form at the 2022 US Open, where, after beating Sofia Kenin, Yulia Putintseva and Zheng Qinwen, she reached the fourth round and only lost in a hard-fought three-setter against Poland's Iga Swiatek.
