    Jessica Pegula: US tennis pro with a powerful backhand

    American tennis player Jessica Pegula was born on 24 February 1994, the daughter of natural gas billionaire Terrence Pegula and his wife Kim. Her parents own the NFL football team the Buffalo Bills as well as the NHL ice hockey team the Buffalo Sabres.

    The Pegula family also includes her brothers Michael and Matthew, along with her sisters Laura and Kelly. Jessica started playing tennis at the age of seven and launched her professional career in 2009. She is currently coached by David Witt.

    Away from centre court: helping dogs in need

    Jessica's nickname is JP. Her best shot is her two-handed backhand, which she loves to hit down the line. She names the US Open as her favourite tournament and Martina Hingis as her big tennis idol. Jessica already runs her own skincare company called “Ready 24”, enjoys playing golf alongside tennis, and is also very interested in art and design.

    In October 2021 she married Taylor Gahagen, alongside whom she is active in charity work. Together with her husband and the organisation “A Lending Paw”, she's a passionate advocate for dogs in need.

    Jessica Pegula's early WTA success

    In 2012, Jessica Pegula made her WTA Tour debut in Québec. At the 2015 US Open she reached the main draw of a Grand Slam for the first time and won her opening match right away. In 2016 she reached her first WTA semi-final in Washington, beating Samantha Stosur, followed by her first WTA final in 2018. In 2019 she celebrated her biggest success to that point in Washington by winning her first WTA singles title, beating Camila Giorgi 6-2, 6-2 on hard court in the final.

    The 1.70m right-hander also showed strong form in 2022. She reached her second consecutive quarter-final at the Australian Open and climbed into the world's top 20 in singles. Jessica Pegula also enjoyed big success in doubles, winning her first WTA 1000 title in Doha alongside Coco Gauff.

    2022 WTA Finals in singles and doubles

    At the 2022 Miami Open, Pegula reached her second WTA 1000 semi-final of her career, but lost to eventual champion and future world No. 1 Iga Swiatek. Shortly after, she reached her third WTA 1000 semi-final at the Madrid Open. There she beat Jil Teichmann to reach her first WTA 1000 final, which she lost after a hard-fought three-set battle against Ons Jabeur. Even so, this took her up to No. 11 in the world.

    At the French Open she reached the quarter-final for the first time. She also reached her first Grand Slam final in doubles. After Wimbledon 2022 she set a new career-high ranking of No. 7 and became the top-ranked American. Her biggest singles success to date came at the 2022 Guadalajara Open, where she won her second and most significant title yet. The triumph propelled her up to No. 3 in the world rankings.

    Pegula qualified for the 2022 WTA Finals in both singles and doubles, making her the first American to do so since Sloane Stephens in 2018. She was also the first American since Serena and Venus Williams in 2009 to qualify in both singles and doubles.
